How Our Orthodontic Clear Aligners Straighten Smiles

Braces can take on misalignment and help straighten smiles. But our teen and adult patients often prefer something a little less obvious. In today’s blog, your Prairie Village, KS, dentist talks about how we correct smiles with our orthodontic clear aligners!

The Causes and Impacts of Poor Alignment

What causes a person to develop poor alignment? Misalignment could occur due to factors in childhood, like complications with the size of the jaw or eruption of the teeth, or even thumb sucking. Losing teeth in the teen and adult years could lead to misalignment too, as could an injury to the face or jaw. The cause may vary, but once you have an uneven smile this could lead to malocclusion, and with it discomfort, a higher risk of tooth decay and gum disease, strain that could cause TMJ disorder and bruxism (teeth grinding), and even embarrassment regarding your appearance. But we can help with our clear orthodontic aligners!

Creating Custom Orthodontics

While braces are effective, when possible, we want to help with a cosmetic alternative. Our custom orthodontic aligners are created based on detailed images and impressions we take of your bite. Each set in the series is designed to fit comfortably and help shift your teeth closer to their optimal position. These orthodontics will be clear in appearance, so they are practically invisible! They will also be removable, so you can take them out before you eat, meaning no need to change your diet. Being removable also makes brushing and flossing your teeth easier, so you have a lowered risk of tooth decay and teeth stains during treatment.

Treatment with Orthodontic Clear Aligners

How does the treatment process work? Essentially, you will wear a set of aligners daily over a period of about two weeks. Each day you will wear them for about 20 to 22 hours. Every two weeks you then switch to the next set as your smile is gradually and gently repositioned. You could see optimal results in as little as one year in some cases, and the system requires fewer office visits too.
