How Misalignment Leads To Oral Health Concerns

Dental misalignment can make negative changes to the appearance of your smile. But in addition to these impacts on your appearance, this could lead to concerns with the health and function of your smile too. But we can help! In today’s blog, your Prairie Village, KS, dentist talks about how misalignment impacts your oral health and how we can help with orthodontic clear aligners.

The Causes of Dental Misalignment

What factors can lead to an uneven smile? For some, losing baby teeth early could alter how the permanent teeth arrive, leading to crooked and crowded teeth. Issues like thumb sucking or tongue thrusting childhood could also be factors. Complications with the severity of the jaw could alter how teeth erupt. In the teen and adult years, losing teeth or the arrival of the wisdom teeth could lead to misalignment, as could injuries to the face or jaw. No matter the cause, we can discuss options to help correct your smile. For many, this could be done with orthodontic clear aligners!

The Trouble for Your Oral Health

Why should you see our team for orthodontic treatment? Misalignment has an obvious impact on the appearance of your smile, and for many that alone is enough to seek treatment. But did you know that uneven teeth could also impact your oral health and bite function? Poor alignment can make thorough brushing and flossing difficult so food and drink particles stay behind to increase the risk of issues like cavities or even gum disease. Poor alignment could also place pressure on the jaw joints, which increases the risk of complications like TMJ disorder and bruxism (teeth grinding). But we can help you avoid these serious complications!

Help With Orthodontic Clear Aligners

With orthodontic clear aligners, we will take detailed digital images of your smile, which we send to a special lab where experts will use them to create a series of clear and custom aligners. Each set is made specifically for your smile! When worn, a set fits like a mouthguard and helps gently shift the teeth. You wear each set for two weeks, 20 to 23 hours a day on average, and repeat this process with each set in the series. For some, an even smile is then possible in as little as one year! These are also removable, which makes mealtime and brushing and flossing much simpler for our patients.
