Why do we develop an uneven smile? Well, for some this could be due to factors in childhood, such as issues with eruption of the teeth. If baby teeth fail to fall out on time, this could alter how permanent teeth arrive and cause poor alignment. If you lose teeth in your teen and adult years, this could also cause nearby teeth to drift to create misalignment. Injury to the face or jaw could be responsible, as could issues with the growth of the jaw or even the arrival of wisdom teeth. As part of your treatment, we will examine your smile to assess the cause and severity of your misalignment, so we can decide if you need clear aligners.
If orthodontic clear aligners are right for you, then we will take detailed images of your smile with an intraoral camera, which allows us to gather multiple images from several angles quickly and comfortably. We then use these in a lab setting to design and craft a series of aligners from a clear and BPA-free plastic material, so they are all essentially invisible and fit comfortably. You can then start the treatment process, and obtain even and stunning results in a short time, often in as little as one year.
The treatment process is a rather simple one. You will wear a set from the series for about two weeks, usually between 20 and 23 hours per day. You then begin wearing the next set in the series and continue this process as your smile is gently and gradually corrected. Your jawbone then reforms around their new positions, and you could see an uneven smile in a year. Teens may need up to 18 months as their mouths are still growing and changing. You can also remove them before meals or prior to brushing and flossing, and even take them out before special occasions!
